Let me apologize in advance. You see, I know Jesus cares for the poor, the homeless. No doubt. Rich Mullins correctly observed that Jesus “had the shoulders of a homeless man.” Calling attention to God’s concern for the poor and the homeless is always a good thing.
With that as a backdrop, a statue of Jesus the Homeless was recently presented to Pope Francis.
However…so sorry, but the first thing I noticed when I saw it wasn’t the nail scarred feet, it was the cloaked head, and I immediately thought of this:
Obviously, neither the sculptor nor the pope are huge Lord of the Rings fans.
The Jesus the Homeless sculpture will likely be installed near St. Peter’s square, and a copy will find a home in Chicago. I think that’s awesome. Another copy of the statue is bound for Perth, Australia, but I think they may want to reconsider. Perth is only 3000 miles from Middle Earth (New Zealand, in case you hadn’t heard), and Jesus was definitely NOT a Ring wraith.
